The Great Bridge Lock opens every hour on the hour, 365 days a year, and someone is on duty around the clock to run it. The Great Bridge Bridge sits right beside it. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District, the bridge opens every hour from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on demand after that, and the Corps notes that the schedule can change in bad weather.
That hourly cycle explains a lot about this part of Chesapeake. Most places in Hampton Roads set their weekend by traffic, store hours, or the tide. In Great Bridge, a lot of what happens in fall sits within a short walk of one stretch of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, and that water runs on a timetable. The October calendar fits around it. There's a sunset paddle at the lock and a Sunday market on the water, and a restaurant is planned for the building at the foot of the bridge.
What the Lock Is Actually Doing Every Hour
The lock is a working piece of water management, not a monument. Visit Chesapeake's history of Great Bridge Lock Park says the lock holds up to 20 boats at a time while operators work four sets of gates and valves.
It's also a guard lock, built to protect water quality. Fresh water from Currituck Sound in North Carolina flows in from one side. Salty water from the Elizabeth River, fed by the Chesapeake Bay, flows in from the other. Most plants and animals do well in one kind of water but not both. When heavy traffic kept the older lock open, the two mixed and the ecosystem suffered. The current guard lock was finished in 1932 and is still in use.
The waterway itself is older. Steam-powered dredges cut the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal in the 1850s. The Army Corps of Engineers took over the locks in 1912. In 1919 the canal became part of the new Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, a protected route that lets boats travel between Florida and Maine without going out on the open ocean. The Corps keeps the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal at a depth of 12 feet, so it handles boats drawing more than 6 feet.
The hourly opening is what you'll see from the park. Boats gather, the gates open, and boats move through. When the Great Bridge Bridge lifts for them, Battlefield Boulevard waits. The City of Chesapeake's FAQ adds that restricted bridge periods can limit openings for pleasure boats. Commercial vessels with two-hour reservations and some emergency and government vessels are exceptions. The lock operators can be reached at 757-547-3311 or on Marine Radio Channel 13 if you're the one on the boat.
Saturday, October 10, Starts and Ends on the Water
Chesapeake Parks, Recreation and Tourism has scheduled two paddles on the same Saturday, about ten hours apart, both on canals connected to Great Bridge's history.
The Fall Paddle starts at 7:30 a.m. on the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail, 1246 Dismal Swamp Canal Trail. The Dismal Swamp canal is the older, hand-dug channel that steamboats outgrew, which is why the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal was built.
The Sunset Paddle runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Great Bridge Lock Park, 100 Locks Road. That window overlaps the bridge's last scheduled hourly opening at 7 p.m. After that, the bridge opens on demand.
Here's how the rest of the month looks on the City of Chesapeake's parks calendar, plus Restaurant Week from Visit Chesapeake:

Sunday's Market Sits on the Same Water
The next morning, the action moves a short way to Battlefield Park South at 120 Reservation Road. The City describes the Waterway Market @ Great Bridge Village as a community market on the Intracoastal Waterway. It runs every Sunday from May 17 through November 22, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Local vendors sell produce and artisan goods, and food trucks and prepared food are part of it.
Counting from today, there are seven Sundays left in the 2026 season, starting October 11 and ending November 22. The City's listing points to the market's Facebook page, Waterway Market Great Bridge Village, for vendor updates.
Since the market runs three hours and the lock opens every hour, you'll likely catch at least a couple of openings if you stay for the whole thing. Picking up produce and then walking the water is about as low-key as a Great Bridge Sunday gets.
The Week in Between Belongs to Restaurants
Chesapeake Restaurant Week falls between the second and third market Sundays, running Monday, October 12, through Sunday, October 18. Visit Chesapeake says participating restaurants offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus starting at $15 and going up in $5 steps, before tax and tip. The Restaurant Week page has the participating restaurants and their hours. Check it before you go, since each restaurant's offer follows its own hours.
Restaurant Week ends on Sunday the 18th. That's also a market day, so a single Sunday can include both a market lunch and a Restaurant Week dinner.
The Building at the Foot of the Bridge
The most interesting waterfront news in Great Bridge this year hasn't opened yet.
On August 10, 2026, The Virginian-Pilot reported that Woody's Raw Bar & Grill had signed a lease to move across the boulevard to 136 Battlefield Blvd. North. That's the freestanding waterfront building on the strip of land between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Elizabeth River, just north of the Great Bridge Bridge. The Pilot wrote that locals had waited for years to see the empty building become something again.
The building has a long history. It opened in 1985 as Locks Pointe Restaurant, one of the city's few fine-dining spots at the time, and Hodad's Bar & Grill also operated inside. Both closed in April 2008 after 23 years. Woody's opened a year later, in 2009, as Big Woody's, in a storefront in the Island Warf Center, and its deck overlooks the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River.
The plan, as owner Jeff LeRoy described it to the Pilot, puts two restaurants under one roof in about 10,000 square feet. The current location is about 5,700. One will be Woody's, with a raw bar serving oysters, clams, crab legs, and mussels. The other is a new concept called Legacy at the Locks. Kayla LeRoy Holton, the company's regional director of operations and the project manager for the build-out, described it this way:
"It's not fine dining; it's just more upscale atmosphere with some elevated menu items, a good wine list and more craft cocktails."
The plan also includes a small stage for entertainment.
The timing is still open. In August, LeRoy said the goal was to move "within 2-4 months" and before the end of the year, and he said there was no exact opening date yet. LeRoy Holton said the plumbing was done, electrical and HVAC were next, and "there are no walls up in there yet." The current Woody's stays open until the move, and then that location closes. We haven't found any later public update. The best way to read this for now is as a planned opening for late 2026, not one with a date. LeRoy also runs a second Woody's on Portsmouth Boulevard in Western Branch, and that location isn't part of the move.
For Great Bridge, the move would put a restaurant back on the piece of land where the canal, the river, and the bridge meet. Locks Pointe once sat there. The building has been empty since 2008, and the lock has kept opening every hour the whole time.
Planning Around the Hour Mark
Put together, the fall calendar here follows a few simple rules:
- Lock openings are on the hour, every day. Get to Great Bridge Lock Park at 100 Locks Road a little before the top of the hour to see a full opening.
- The bridge's hourly schedule runs 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. After 7 p.m. it opens on demand, and weather can change the schedule.
- Sundays through November 22 are market days, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Battlefield Park South, 120 Reservation Road.
- October 12–18 is Restaurant Week, with menus starting at $15.
- Arboretum programs fill two Saturdays. Nature's Night Frights is October 17, and the Fall Migration Bird Walk is October 24, both at 624 Oak Grove Road.
The city calendar doesn't show last-minute cancellations, so confirm paddle and arboretum details on the event pages before you head out.
If you've lived near Battlefield Boulevard long enough to know the bridge schedule by heart, you already understand how much the waterway shapes this part of Chesapeake. I'd love to hear your favorite spot to watch the lock, or which of these fall weekends you're looking forward to.
